What’s the difference between Wink and YouGov BrandIndex?
Both track brand health continuously and let you compare your brand with competitors in a dashboard. BrandIndex is syndicated: YouGov surveys a nationally representative sample every day about the brands it tracks, and you subscribe to the data. Wink builds a tracker for your category and surveys its buyers every month. What they have in common:
- Always-on data
- Neither is a one-off study. BrandIndex adds data daily; Wink adds a wave every month.
- Competitor comparison
- Both show your brand against others in the same market. BrandIndex covers 27 000+ brands; Wink tracks up to five competitors you choose.
- Funnel and perception metrics
- Both measure aided awareness, consideration and current use, plus how people see the brand.
How does pricing compare?
YouGov doesn’t publish a BrandIndex price: its product page offers “Talk to sales” and “Book a demo” (checked 18 October 2026). Its free BrandIndex Lite covers one metric, Buzz. Its MCP access is licensed separately from the platform and the API.
Wink publishes one monthly price per tracker for each market, on the pricing page.
Who answers the survey, and why does it matter?
BrandIndex asks a nationally representative sample, so a score reflects the whole adult population. Wink asks only people screened into your category, so a score reflects the people who could buy from you.
For a mass-market brand the two can tell a similar story. For a niche category (pet insurance, say, or baby formula) most of a general sample won’t be in the market, and the gap between them matters more.
The other difference is unaided awareness. BrandIndex’s 16 metrics include aided brand awareness, defined in YouGov’s brand-movers reports as “whether or not a consumer has ever heard of a brand”, and no unprompted measure. Wink asks which brands people can name before it shows any, then asks aided awareness.
Is Wink an alternative to YouGov BrandIndex in South Africa?
Yes. BrandIndex data on South African brands exists: KLA used it for South Africa’s most recommended brands for 2026, and Bizcommunity reports that BrandIndex tracks over 200 brands in South Africa. By comparison, YouGov’s own brand-movers analyses covered more than 1 700 brands in the UK and more than 500 in Australia. Before you buy, check with YouGov that your brand and your competitors are tracked.
Wink tracks the brands you name, among South African category buyers with quotas by age, gender and province, in English and other South African languages.
